How to Prepare Your Pet for a Photography Session
A relaxed, happy pet makes for the best photos. These simple tips will help your dog, cat, or other companion look and feel their best on session day.
Pet photography sessions are some of my absolute favorites — animals are authentic, expressive, and endlessly entertaining. But they also require a little preparation to get the best results.
Start with a good grooming session a day or two before. A freshly bathed and brushed pet looks great on camera, but avoid bathing the morning of — some pets get anxious from the process and you want them calm and settled.
For dogs, a good exercise session before we shoot works wonders. A tired dog is a cooperative dog. A 30–45 minute walk or play session before we start means they'll be more likely to sit still and less likely to bolt after every squirrel.
Bring their favorite treats and toys. I'll use these to get their attention and capture those bright-eyed, ears-forward expressions. Let me know in advance what motivates your pet most.
For cats, we'll typically shoot in your home where they're most comfortable. I'll arrive early and let them get used to me and my equipment before we start. Patience is key — the best cat photos often happen when they've forgotten the camera is there.
Most importantly: keep the energy calm and positive. Pets pick up on our stress, so if you're relaxed and having fun, they will be too.
