5 Tips for a Beautiful Family Session with Your Horses

Combining family portraits with your beloved horses creates images that are truly one-of-a-kind. Here's how to make the most of your session.

Family sessions with horses are some of the most meaningful work I do. These images capture not just how your family looks, but who you are — the bond between you, your horses, and the land you share. Here are five tips to make the most of your session.

1. Choose a meaningful location. Your own farm or barn is often the best choice — it's where your horses are most relaxed and where your family's story actually lives. The worn fence post, the familiar pasture, the tack room — these details add authenticity that a generic location can't provide.

2. Coordinate, don't match. Identical outfits look dated. Instead, choose a color palette — say, warm neutrals with a pop of rust or sage — and let each family member express their own style within it. This creates visual harmony without looking forced.

3. Let the kids lead. If you have children who ride, let them show off what they love. A child confidently trotting their pony, or grooming their horse with focused concentration, makes for far more compelling images than a stiff posed portrait.

4. Plan for candid moments. Some of my favorite family images happen between the posed shots — a spontaneous laugh, a horse nuzzling a child's shoulder, a quiet moment between rider and horse. Leave room in the session for these to happen naturally.

5. Relax and trust the process. I know it can feel stressful to coordinate horses, kids, and outfits all at once. But the moments of beautiful chaos — the horse that won't stand still, the toddler who wants to pet every nose — often make the best photos. Embrace it.
